Pocomoke River Canoe Company

Paddle gently in one of their Old Town canoes through shady caverns of foliage. Novice or experienced paddlers will find the flat water Pocomoke River a delight! See the sun-dappled surface glisten as you paddle past fallen logs, clusters of pink or white blossomed water lilies, or the exposed "knees" of the bald cypress.

Please add $40 to any room rate (per trip). Their popular trips are clear and waiting for paddlers in 2008: Advance reservations are strongly suggested for all trips.

Guests of the Atlantic Hotel may choose either canoes (which will accommodate up to 3 adults) or tandem (2-person) kayaks for one of the following trips. Those guests who would prefer to paddle their own solo kayaks may do so by paying an additional $10/kayak at the time of their trip.

Nassawango Creek (Red House Road)
Nassawango Creek winds through 7,000 acres of Nature Conservancy property. The forest is thick with woodland birds, and there are plenty of wonderful bald cypress trees. We put in at the Red House Road crossing near Furnace Town Historic Site. Paddlers head slowly east on the creek, turning left when they reach its mouth at the Pocomoke River, and paddle backk to Snow Hill. The trip takes about 3 hours. The Pocomoke River south of Snow Hill may have power boats, especially on the weekends, as the river is very popular among bass fishermen. But the occasional power boat (fishermen are always very polite to canoeists and kayakers) is worth the wild beauty of the creek.

Porter's Crossing
Begins 5 1/2 miles north of Snow Hill on the Pocomoke River. At the put-in point, the river is scarcely 20 yards wide, bounded by thick bogs of bald cypress. Paddlers wind around magnificent cypresses and around the edges of vast beds of spatterdock (a water lily-like plant). On sunny days the logs will be crowded with turtles. There are statley great blue herons fishing in the shallows and leggy white egrets. In spring, the river's banks are dotted with migrating warblers. Fishing - for bass, perch, bluegill and the river's signature fish, the alligator gar - is good. The trip takes approximately 2 1/2 hours.

To get to the Pocomoke River Canoe Company from the Atlantic Hotel: Go south on Main Street, which will end at Route 113. Turn right on 113 and continue 14 miles. You will see a Chevrolet dealership on your right as you approach Snow Hill. Turn right at Business 113 to Snow Hill; and come into town, turning right at the traffic light (Washington Street). The canoe & kayak shop is 2 blocks on your right, at the bridge.
